I seem to be having the same problem when I make PDFs via Distiller. I have posted this question/comment elsewhere, but this seems an appropriate place to re-ask...

Every time I purchase a new program, it adds a smattering of new fonts to my computer. These fonts just appear, and are available to use in other programs (i.e. I install the program to make CD Covers and suddenly I have a batch of new fonts when I'm using Word or InDesign. Though I don't notice the additions to a long list of fonts that I thought were mine to use.)

Is there a way to know which fonts are going to have permission problems ahead of time.
I build ads for people and, of course, use all the fonts at my disposal for variety. I've had a few occasions where I've given a pdf to the printer and they have had an unexplained "font problem" that sounds like what Susan is talking about.

I understand, I guess, the deal with permissions for embedding, but is there a way to note which fonts are going to give me trouble so I don't use them, or to keep the fonts that a program adds to my computer off the list that the layout programs are using.

I am using Acrobat Distiller 4.0 to create the pdfs (WinXP, PS printers, etc.), and when I view them they look perfect before I send them out (of course the incriminating fonts would be on my machine.) Isn't the purpose of "embedding all fonts" so that you can send a pdf and know it the client and/or printer is going to be able to output from any machine/platform.

If this is something that later versions of Acrobat/Distiller have overcome, I'd gladly upgrade.

If not, I'm just as frustrated as the earlier users about fonts slipping into my layout programs that I guess I can't use.

Any help is appreciated
