Batch Converting to 450 pixels by 450 pixels canvas size

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to Automate the process of taking a batch of 72 dpi jpgs of various sizes and resizing them to an equally horizontal/vertical canvas size. The files I have are basically all different sizes - none of which are "Square". I want the converted files to be square.

Ultimately I want to crop each file to it's horizontal or vertical dimension, whichever is longest.

I've looked through the bundled scripts and actions in photoshop but no luck.

Any help would be appreciated

If you want to keep all of your image and add extra canvas to your files so that they are all square in format without cropping then you can do this with an action. Just call insert menu item and use fit image from menubar/file/automate set both fields to your 450 pixels then use canvas size and set to 450x450 centered.
