If the file is DSC complaint, it will have a %%Pages: n line in the
header, or %%Pages: (AtEnd) telling you it is in the trailer.

If the file is not DSC compliant, the only way to count pages is to
fully interpret the file.

For instance, counting showpages would not help you here:

1 1 10 { showpage } for

which produces 10 pages.  In general, you can't just insert text into
any old PDF - where would you put it in this example?
