Actually, Aandi did NOT say that "JPEG is essentially an RGB format." It absolutely isn't. JPEG-encoded images can be RGB or CMYK! And JPEG-encoded images in PostScript Level 2 may be RGB or CMYK. Adobe PostScript Level 2 doesn't automatically and globally provide for support for separations, although Adobe PostScript 3 does require such device support. The problem is when applications attempt to perform separations. Some, such as Quark XPress, have major problems with EPS files other than PostScript Level 1 and I believe that is exactly what Aandi was hinting at in his response. By creating EPS as Level 1, the possibility of JPEG encoding/compression is eliminated. - Dov
