OS 9 apps dont recognize OSX ps files

Postscript files that I've created from Quark6 or Indesign aren't recognized as postscript files by Distiller or my RIP on OS 9.x Macs.

Does anyone know why?

As a note: I can open the files in Word and save as "text file" and they are then recognized and ripped just fine.

There has got to be a better way!
