Postscript Rendering Issue

In batch, we are converting stored PDF documents into Postscript so they may be combined into a single file that may be sent to a high speed Xerox printer as an outgoing mail stream (barcoded pages for automated stuffing). This conversion is occurring using an Acrobat Reader for UNIX feature.

THE QUESTION: Has anyone encountered an issue where postscript is not consistently rendered on different printers? We have an issue where the page renders fine at the development facility on a low end Lexamrk laser printer, but it enlarges a bit when printed on the production printers. The enlargement causes the address information to not line up with the envelope properly, and text near the margins pops off the page.

The enlargement is not limited to text, but to lines as well. We have tried embedding fonts, and have ruled out everything but the printers (the .ps is lpr'ed directly to the printers).

Thanks.

It's worth mentioning that if you print-to-file you need to make sure
you turn OFF all the resizing options which are on by default.

Postscript is rendered according to the hardware and software of a specific device, so it is not consistently rendered. A filmsetter will generally give you cleaner, finer lines than a high-end laser printer, hinting and antialiasing notwithstanding. Raster size is part of it, but unless your PostScript has already been rendered for a lower resolution printer (device-specific PostScript is not generally recommended), it would not be unexpected for it to look larger on your Lexmark.

If you look into the PPDs of both the Lexmark and the Xerox printer, you'll probably notice that the "ImageableArea" on the Xerox printer equals the respective page sizes but is decreased by certain margins on the Lexmark printer.

It may be that the latter is configured to do a shrink to fit by default.
