I've been postscripting files for years and have always had this nagging question:

What is the different between PS "text documents" and PS "PrintingLib documents"?

Thanks.

PrintingLib appears to be an older (v 8.5) Mac extension for PostScript printing support (Adobe reportedly integrated these into their own printer drivers -- Adobe can anser that question better than I -- but at any rate they appear to be printer information files rather than printable PostScript images).

PS "text documents" doesn't ring an immediate bell, but I would assume them to be ASCII (versus binary) PostScript documents.

Hope that helps.

Gunnar,

Thanks. Yes, that helps.

Text documents are indeed ASCII PS documents. I just didn't know how they differed from "PrintingLib" files.

PrintingLib files are printable postscript images. As far as imaging is concerned, they output exactly the same as regular PS files.

I have two RIPs, one of them has not been upgraded since 1996...this is the one that shows "PrintingLib" under file type.
Maybe it's time to upgrade? I only use it for simple documents.

I have to wonder if referring to a printable postscript image as a "PrintingLib" is idiosyncratic to your RIP. As I mentioned, the only reference to it is Mac-specific. The name also implies that it is a library rather than a printable image.

At any rate (this is the pragmatist rather than the theorist speaking), if your RIP handles it, then it's a question of money: if you can afford to upgrade the RIP, then go ahead.
