Here's the facts: We do 5 greyscale publications monthly, with about 100 ads in each publication. Last time we went to print, 4 ads showed up without the L's and/or I's. Just a single font was affected in each ad, and the font was also different in each ad...3 were system fonts, (Arial Narrow was one) and one was a downloaded font. This also happened 2 months ago with a single ad. All ads were designed on Windows in Illustrator 10, although by 2 different artists. They are saved as PDFs by the artists for pagination. The same person has been doing pagination for several years, so there has been no change. To make things even more complicated...several of these ads are placed in 2 or 3 out of the five publications. In some the i's and/or l's are there, and not in others. Our press is telling us it's because we are paginating with Pagemaker. (But we have been for the last 3 or 4 years. We are moving to InDesign soon, but clients do tend to get mad when their ad is unreadable) So the question is: Is it our printers problem or are we at fault in some way. ANY insight, ideas or direction would be wonderful. Thankyou!

Without knowing anything about what PDF options were used in saving the PDF from Illustrator, how you are creating PDF or PostScript from PageMaker, and what type of RIPs and workflows your printer is using, it would be next to impossible to remotely diagnose your problem. Note that Illustrator 10 is fairly obsolete. The current version of Illustrator is 12 (i.e., CS2); many bugs in earlier versions of Illustrator have been fixed. Furthermore, PageMaker is fairly long in the tooth (so to speak). - Dov

We recently had a similar error with FrameMaker (6.0 and 7.1) on WinXP. The error disappeared after rebooting the PC. I suspect it might have something to do with the "famous" FNTCACHE.DAT file which has been discussed in another thread, but I'm not sure Helge

Without a sample file it's impossible to say anything for sure. Can you reproduce the problem on a different RIP, for instance, Ghostscript? Regards, Alex Cherepanov
