I have a large embedded font in postscript with over 16000 glyphs in the Type 42 or Type 1 format. To be able to display all the characters, I am creating re-encoded fonts from this font with different encoding vectors. But I find that when I create the 33rd reencoded font, with some RIPs like Adobe distiller, Xerox Phaser etc. I get the following error : %%[ Error: limitcheck; OffendingCommand: definefont; ErrorInfo: Encoding --nostringval-- ]%%. In other words, I am practically not able to have an embedded Type 1 or Type 42 font with more than 8192 glyphs. What is causing the limitation on these RIPs? I was not able to find any message on the internet that talks about this kind of a problem. I tested this on Windows-XP platform and Adobe Acrobat Distiller 6.0. It will be great if someone knows about this and atleast can share what is happening here. Thanks in Advance, Sreenath

Perhaps you could post (an URL to) a sample file that fails. Without looking into the code - and possibly trying it out on different interpreters, it is impossible to judge if oyu hit an architectural limit (like the max. number of nested gsave levels, e.g.) or if your job exhausted VM or disk space or whatever. The files are uploaded at the following links :- Type 1 - <http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=265077> Type 42 - <http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=265080> The afore-mentioned error was on Acrobat Distiller 7.0, while the error with Distiller 6.0 is %%[ Error: limitcheck; OffendingCommand: scalefont ]%% with failure at the same point. I suspected one of the architectural limits being hit, but could not figure out which one. Even for language level 1 100 fonts can be simultaneously defined, so that may not be the cause. Tried vmstatus before the point of failure to find that only 25% of the memory was used, and vmreclaim obviously did not help. Hope this is good enough for one of you to help with what is wrong here. Thanks, Sreenath

It seems to be a distiller quirk. I fed both of your test files through Ghostscript (several versions), several PostScript printers (one HP clonscript and one Xerox Phaser with an Adobe PostScript3 RIP), and several Acrobat distillers (4.05 on Solaris, 5, 7, and 8 on WInXP). The error(s) you reported occor only with the various distillers, all other RIPs tested rendered the two files quite well (though the printout if the two are different, is that right?). Perhaps you should post this to the Acrobat form(s). Helge
