Hi. I'm a new user. I have a piece of software from 1996 that I have to use to print check forms to a new IBM IM1332 Printer that supports PS Level 3 emulation. The software supports only PS Level 1 fonts like MICR and all the rest. I'm having problems with the software (designed for Windows 3.0 and I'm using XP Pro) as it is and haven't been able to generate a test form to print to the printer - it's a headache, printer is in NC and I'm in NJ, and not on the same network... I'm trying to argue for a software upgrade that won't happen, so I'm anticipating a problem with the printing, but don't know anything about PostScript. So I guess my question is: Is PS Level 3 backwards compatible?

There is no such thing as a "PostScript Level 1 font" ... Do you mean Adobe Type 1 font? Any device that claims to be PostScript 3-compatible (including clones) should be able to handle such fonts without any problems. - Dov

Thanks to both of you! The documentation from this Create!Form thing says only PostScript Level 1 fonts are compatible for adding into it - specifically, .AFM files. I am a complete neophyte so I'd tend to think you the better source of accurate information - there are a few other hinky inconsistencies in the manuals they provided about VMS. Many thanks - that's one less thing I have to worry about! --kt--

>The documentation from this Create!Form thing The documentation sounds very odd (or, really, wrong) unless you are misquoting it. >says only PostScript Level 1 fonts are compatible for adding into it There is no such thing as a "level 1" font. However, there is a "type 1" font. > specifically, .AFM files. That isn't a font at all, but a file with just information ABOUT a font. A type 1 font is likely to have a .PFB file and a .PFM file.
