I have an application with prints each page from a specified tray using code: % use tray 2 <</ManualFeed false /MediaPosition 0>> setpagedevice % use tray 3 <</ManualFeed false /MediaPosition 1>> setpagedevice It is working fine til, say tray 2 is empty, it puts message that tray is empty and then pulls paper from a different tray. Is there a way in postscript to keep it from defaulting to a different tray, when the specified tray is empty. This is on an HP Laser Jet 8150 printer. When I run it on a HP 4100dtn printer it stops til paper is replenished. Thanks Dale

This is a very awkward part of PostScript, where the printer manufacturer can make decisions that are very specific to the printer, and the PostScript programmer may have little influence over them. You might be able to make the trays non-equivalent, for instance by defnining incompatible InputAttributes. Aandi Inston

Actually, for this type of information, you are best off to contact to contact Hewlett-Packard Technical Support, especially since neither of the two devices you mention use Adobe PostScript! - Dov

Like many other HP printers, the 8150 switches to another tray if the currently selected tray gets empty and some other tray contains media of the same size and type. The best you can do is to configure the printer's trays for different paper types and/or sizes (using the web interface or the control panel) and select paper types instead of tray numbers in your application. for the allowable paper types see the printer's PPD. As you mentioned the 4100, the automatic tray switching can be set to "off" on that printer. Helge

Thank you, I changed the trays to have different type, and then they did not switch between trays with different types. Dale

On some printers you can switch off auto tray switching. That way when a tray runs out of paper it will not go to another one. Hope that helps..... Jose
