Hello, we have a postscript level 2 rip on our imagesetter. Haven't been able to convince the owners to buy a postscript level 3 yet. First, I have tried every way I can think of to run windows XP but the postscript level 2 rip will not accept it. So now I'm back to running Windows 98. Every EPS we make from Illustrator has to be saved to 6.0 or the rip will not accept it. If people make us PDF's not saving them as acrobat 3.0 or (PDF 1.2) our rip will not accept it. I have just began using Ghostscript which seems to be working for me but I'm unsure how or why. All I do is open the PDF up and resave it. What I am asking is is there a way to take a "job.ps" postscript level 3 and resave it or convert it to a postscript level 2. I couldn't get Windows XP to work and I'm afraid MacOS X will have the same problems.

The only way to go "down level" with PostScript is to fully interpret
it - the job your RIP (should) be doing. You can use Distiller to
convert to PDF, then print level 2 from Acrobat. If using GhostScript
take great care to be sure it preserves CMYK, does not reduce
resolution etc. You need to do the same with Distiller of course.

What a hassle. PS Level 3 has been the industry standard for many years now. Tell your employers to wake up.
