Sending a PDF File Directly to a Postscript Printer

I am trying to send a PDF file directly to a Postscript level 3 printer (without going through a print driver). I found information that stated that if a printer supports Postscript level 3 it will print a PDF file sent directly to it. To test this I copied a PDF file directly to a Postscript level 3 printer (an IBM InfoPrint 32) using "copy xxx.pdf LPT1 /b" from a DOS prompt, but it doesn't print properly -- a bunch of weird characters print out. Any ideas how I can get this to work?

Thanks..............Dennis

If printer has IP address, use LPR command

lpr -S <IPADDRESS of printer> -P PS <pdf filename with path>

LPR is dos command to send a print job to network printer

Dennis,

Such information is at best misleading. PostScript 3 printers do not necessarily support direct PDF printing. And those printers that provide PDF support do so by internally creating PostScript from PDF and then processing the resultant PostScript. Furthermore, printer with that feature typically do not accept jobs via the same communications channels as they do PostScript jobs; there is no standard for this at this time.

A further complication that you should consider is that for typical laser printers that have PDF support, that support is pretty much frozen at the PDF version that was current at the time the printer model was being developed.

Bottom line is that you are much better off printing PDF via PostScript to the printer from the current version of Acrobat Reader, Adobe Reader 6, or Acrobat (the full product).
