XP + PostScript + Symbol font = ???

I do technical typesetting on an XP platform, and I have a problem using PostScript (for PDFs or simply laser-printing) in conjunction with any PostScript font that uses the Symbol character set.

When I try to print or PDF a file in Microsoft Word or Adobe FrameMaker, either I get blanks where the Symbol characters should be or I get errors messages like this:

ERROR: ulimitcheck
OFFENDING COMMAND: xshow

STACK:

[61 57 53 62 0 ]
( )

When I send the same file to the laserprinter via PCL, it prints fine. When I use Quark or Illustrator, the same printer set up handles the Symbol characters beautifully in either PCL or PostScript.

I'd rather use FrameMaker than Quark for most jobs, but until this clears up I can't. Anybody have any ideas?
