PPD files are for printers. They don't change with time unless the printer manufacturer (who is the party responsible for providing a PPD file for each printer model) has screwed up and needs to fix the file with an updated version. If you have the latest service pack of Windows XP installed, you have the latest PostScript driver. The driver is maintained and distributed by Microsoft. The installer on the Adobe site only updates the driver if the version on your OS is older than the one contained with that installer. It also associates your designated PPD file with the driver to create a PostScript printer driver instance specific to your PostScript printer model. - Dov
