Using the Postscript printer driver vers. 1.06 following happens:

1. Printing a testpage on HP 4050 from Windows XP gives a printer error:
     ERROR: undefined
     OFFENDING COMMAND: width

STACK:

/TextInit
     -mark-

2. The same happens with some graphic and cad applications on XP

3. Printing from Acrobat or MS-Word on XP gives no error

4. Using the same driver everything works well on Windows 2000

5. Printing a testpage on HP 4600 from Windows XP using the same driver
gives no error.

All device and document settings (except paper tray) are set to default.

Have you tried using Microsoft's or HP's supplied driver for the
printer?

HP-PCL driver work well.
But all user should use the server based
postscript drivers. Some workstations connected to the server use Windows 2000
some newer have Windows XP Prof.
This configuraton worked fine for severeal
years (drivers were updated periodically)
using Windows 2000.

Sorry, I meant the HP/Microsoft PostScript drivers, not PCL.

Under Windows 2000/XP, the PostScript drivers are distributed and officially supported by Microsoft, not Adobe, although Adobe co-developed the driver and assists Microsoft with maintanance of the driver.

The LaserJet 4xxx series of printer does not use Adobe PostScript, but rather an emulation from Xionics (now Oak Technology). This emulation has been problematic in many situations.

I suggest you contact Hewlett-Packard (or use any one of their self-help forums) for assistance with this problem.

The solution for the problem is as follows:

Set in "Document Defaults - Advanced" under "Postscript Options":

"Postscript Output Option" to "Optimize for Portability" (instead of "Opt.. for Speed").

The optimize for portability versus optimize for speed option choice should not make one bit of difference in this case. The same PostScript is generated for the single page job that was described, a test page.

Some more tests showed that the above printing error only appears when the page to print contains an image (e.g. the windows test page). Pure text prints fine.
After switching the Postscript option to "optimize for portabilty" all printing is ok.
