Problem with images in PDF output from Distiller

I've got a question concerning Acrobat on Windows 2000. I have an application printing to PostScript, and am then converting the .ps file to PDF using Acrobat Distiller 4.05. No matter what PostScript driver I use I get the same problem: the images in the files (originally from .tif) have unwanted horizontal lines appearing across them.

Originally the process was being run on Windows NT, using the Xerox DocuTech 6.135 01.02.00 driver to create the .ps files, and Distiller then produced the PDF's correctly.

I have tried Adobe's own PS driver in place of the Xerox, and I have also tried printing direct to Distiller, and in both cases the problem with the horizontal lines occurs.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Chris Atkins.

The KEY question is exactly what "application" do you have printing to the PostScript driver? And tell us something about the images.

The problem sounds like multiple images are being "stitched together" either by the application, GDI, or the driver. This often occurs with Microsoft Office applications when dealing with images with transparent backgrounds, for example.

By the way, there is no Adobe driver for Windows 2000. The driver delivered as part of both Windows 2000 and Windows XP is actually a joint effort of Adobe and Microsoft. Adobe does deliver a driver installer that allows an alternative way of creating PostScript printer driver instances simply by associating PPD files with the driver instead of using the somewhat Byzantine "Add Printer" wizard that requires predefined .inf files, etc.

Note also that PostScript is indeed device dependent. Using a PostScript driver instance setup for a Docutech will likely lead to PostScript that is inappropriate for creation of a general-purpose PDF file. You might lose color in your images, for example. You may end up with page margins. And you certainly won't have the ability to define arbitrary custom page sizes up to Acrobat Distiller's limits.
