PPD file I need is on my hard drive already - Downloaded winsteng.exe to a folder on my desktop; when I double click to execute,it unpacks but then nothing happens, no files appear in the folder, just the program I downloaded is there. Using Winzip I extracted the files into the folder on my desktop. Double clicked on Setup Application it will not run. Any suggestions?

(1) Make sure that you are running with full system administration privileges, as "Administrator." (2) When you say that "winsteng.exe" or the "setup application" (after manual extraction) won't execute, what do you mean? Are you getting a message that the file isn't executable or is it executing with no tangible results? Have you tried seeing whether something is actually running via the system "Task Manager"? - Dov

Dov, When we click on the Set Up executable icon, we get an hour glass for about 1/2 second and then nothing - no error messages, no nothing. We did check inside task manager and there doesn't seem to be anything associated with Winsteng running and we are using full Admin privileges. Any other ideas?? Gregg

Only two other ideas ... Do you have any funky ISDN cards installed on the system? A few years back, we were made aware of an ISDN card, primarily used in Europe, that had a driver that somehow prevented the PostScript Windows driver installer from properly running (although I believe it got farther than your system did in executing). When that ISDN card's driver was uninstalled, the PostScript driver installer ran fine. The user then needed to reinstall the ISDN card driver after creating the PostScript printer driver instances. That is the only situation we were aware in which the installer failed to run. (Note that the installer is not Adobe's -- it is a standard 16-bit InstallShield installer, compatible with Windows'9x/Me/NT4/2000/XP/2003 -- not particularly "modern" but not known to be generically defective in any way. Only other thing? Do you have mapped network drives, especially big ones and/or ones on slow links? If you do, try unmapping them and then running the driver installer. The installer sometimes goes looking on all mapped volumes for somethings (what, I don't know)! Let us know what you find, if anything, that might match the above. - Dov

OK, I'm exhausted. I've un-mapped my network drive, closed everything, made sure all my Norton Anti-Virus and Script-Blocker was off and gone into the task manager and closed everything that the computer would let me close and I still can't get the Set-Up to run. I got a second versions of Winsteng from my Service Bureau and it reacts the same. Then, I took that same disk, put it into another computer and it runs just fine. So, there is something on my computer or about my computer that is not allowing this Set-up to run. I've got a Dell Workstation, only 2 years old, Running 2000 pro and I can't imagine that my ISDN card is funky or wierd - in fact it was another Dell Workstation a couple of years older that the same Winsteng run just fine on. It just doesn't make sense, but there is something about my hardware or software or system settings that Winsteng doesn't like. Any more ideas...

I would like to suggest you install WinXP at new. Some time ago I tried to install dot.net on WinXP and it didn't work. After a new setup of WinXP the setup of dot.net went without any circumstances.

So you do have an ISDN card. Then it is indeed likely that the problem I noted about a conflict between an ISDN card driver (it's the driver that is funky and wierd, not the card) and the installer is the issue here. Try uninstalling the ISDN card driver and then try running the Adobe Windows Universal PostScript Printer Driver installer. Then reinstall the ISDN card driver. FWIW, this is the only situation that we are aware of in which some of other system component gets in the way of the InstallShield installer. - Dov

Sorry, but asking the user to reinstall everything to solve this problem if he hasn't already taken our advice to simply temporarily uninstall the ISDN driver is akin to using an elephant gun on a squirrel! (8^)> - Dov
