I am tring to install a post script driver to XP machine.
I d/loaded the driver installer from adobe pscript5 5.2
but it installs with the error 'system error 126 unable to load string'
'failure in addprinter. system error 1797 driver unknown'
after asking for the printer type.

this error occurs if I use the generic driver or another ppd (patherpro46.ppd)

what now???

Use Postscript driver version 1 instead of 5.
The name of the file is wininsteng.exe

Have you tried installing the PostScript driver that comes with
Windows?

I am also having the same issue. I am installing winsteng.exe version 1.0.6. I can not find the wininsteng.exe? This gives me the same error. I do not have the a postscript driver nor a printer on the windows or driver cd's. can adobe provide these drivers?

Sorry I don't understand. On the one hand, you say you are installing
it - on the other hand, you say you can't find it??

Perhaps you could give us more details about your problem.

On Windows XP you might as well use the Add Printer icon to add a
PostScript driver in most cases. What PostScript printer do you have?

Is there a difference between winsteng.exe and wininsteng.exe (please note they are spelled differently and would lead me to beleive they are different programs?) or is this just a typing error?

How do you add a postscript printer. I have an HP officejet G85, but when I try to insall, it install as a regular printer?

That isn't a PostScript printer, so I don't see what you are trying to
do. If you don't have a PostScript printer, adding a printer driver
won't turn it into one...? What is the end result you want to get?

I need the postscript printer to convert word .doc's into pdf. I can not convert doc's into pdf with Acrobat 6.0 because there is no post script printer. All of the other machine (all running windows XP) have then installed already. How do you install a postscript printer?

Installing Acrobat 6.0 (Standard or Professional) should have
automatically installed a suitable driver. There is probably something
else wrong, but you can indeed try installing the driver first. Just
use Add Printer and select any PostScript printer, for instance the
Apple LaserWriter IINTX. Then uninstall, then reinstall, Acrobat.

I installed the printer (apple LW IINTX), then unistalled and re-installed Acrobat 6.0 pro. I got an 20225 error can not install printer. a few times.
While in word, I can print to the Apple printer and it will convert it to pdf...not the easiest way, but it works.

Thanks for the help

Proper installation of Acrobat 6 Professional yields a PostScript printer driver instance named "Adobe PDF." If that doesn't occur on your system, you probably have a corrupted OS installation in some manner and/or are not installing Acrobat as a full system Administrator. Creating PDF via distilled PostScript destined for a LaserWriter IINTX is not only not the easiest way, but it will often lose color in your images, yield unprintable margin areas, and prevent proper font embedding, amongst other problems. You might want to have your system configuration fully checked out by someone who really understands Windows XP inside-out.
