Can't Load PS Driver

Hi:
I have been unable to load the Adobe PS Driver on my new XP/Home machine. When I try I get this Message:

Failure in Add Printer(Generic Postscript Printer) System error: 1797. The printer driver is unknown.

I have looked at all the knowledge bases (MS & Adobe) and even Googled it but no luck. I have learned that others have had this problem but no solutions were offered. I have had some good response in the PM forum but no solutions. I hope someone can help.

It isn't an Adobe driver in any case. But there is a PostScript driver
in Windows XP. Just pick the PostScript printer you have.

Hi Aandi:
It has always been my understanding that one had to have the Adobe PS driver installed to be able to print PS to file. I do it in order to create .pdfs. If there is such a driver in XP I hope that you can direct me to it.

No, you don't have to have the Adobe driver. Indeed, there isn't such
a thing any more for Windows 2000 or XP, the "AdobePS" installer
installs the same Microsoft driver you get from the Add Printers icon.

So, you just install the driver for the printer you intend, finally,
to print the files on. That's all there is to it.

Hi Aandi:
If this is as you say how come I can't create a PS file no matter what PS printer I load from the XP Library. When I do a PS file the thing pops along (albeit too fast) but nothing is made no matter where I save it or what I call it. I still also have the error: 1797. I'm really puzzled.

I don't know why this is happening to you, but it doesn't mean the
advice is wrong. More, that something on your system is wrong. You've
installed a PS driver with Add Printer, correct? Which one?

When do you get this error? From every application when you select
PRINT TO FILE and that driver?

Error 1797 means "the printer driver is unknown", and indicates
something is broken, not that you need to install something else. I
see you also got the same error when you tried to run Adobe's
installer, is that correct?

Hi Aandi:
Be assured that I don't take any of the advice I've gotten as wrong. Quite the contrary, all of the advice has led to where I am now. That is that I'm coming to believe that when this new machine was set up some part of XP was either broken or was left out. As you mentioned I get that 1797 error only when trying to install the Adobe driver. Installing any other PS printer from the XP library works OK. The problem is that they don't create a file of any sort. They seem to, in that PM bounces right along as if a file is being created but the result is NADA. Do you have any idea what components in XP(if missing or corrupt) would cause such behavior?
Regards,
Mike

You write:

Well, are you sure of that? I mention it because you wouldn't be the
first to be caught out by the print to file methods in Windows NT
systems.

When you print to file you should get a prompt, with enough room to
type a name only. You should type a full path name like
c:\file.ps

If you don't include a file type, PRN is added. If you don't include a
disk and directory, the location is unpredictable, and could even be a
temporary folder, depending on the application.

Hi Aandi:
When I choose a PS printer I get the usual options re page format, sampling, error messages and the block to name and save the file in. I usually browse to the folder I want to save it in and name the file there. I have also tried typing the location right in the printer dialogue box but neither works. I have also used the find function to try to locate the file but it is nowhere on the machine. I'm at a loss.
Aandi thanks for your continued interest and help,
Mike

Ah, wait, this is PageMaker isn't it. You just dropped that in the
last message.

Some thoughts.

- PageMaker processes EVERYTHING differently. To see if print to file
is working in general try it with Notepad, some other simple
application (not MS Office).

- Make sure it's PageMaker 7.

Hi Aandi:
By golly it worked!! You're right on. I guess my problem is with PM 7 (which I really like) Any suggestions along these lines or should I continue to look at windows. Just so you know I have uninstalled and reinstalled PM several times without result. This is about PM.
Thanks again,
Mike

Well, you now know where the problem lies, so I would take the problem
to the PageMaker forum. With luck, someone there has seen it before.
Do mention the install error on the Adobe installer, though, it might
be familiar too.

Hi Aandi:
As Yogi said "its not over til its over". Note pad seemed to have created a PS file but in reality it was only an empty icon. Then, as sort of a baseline, I tried to make a PS in ID. (An application I dislike) ID told me that, although I installed an AGFA Advantra-44 from the XP library, there was no PS printer installed. I believe there is some sort of port problem with this machine. I will call the guys who put this thing together today. I'll let you know the outcome. BTW my old Athlon Win98 perks right along.

Hi Aandi:
Thought I'd give you an update on my PS problem. Contacted the people who made this machine and, with their help I restored XP. No help. At this point I'm at a dead end. All I guess I can do is to hope that some how Adobe recognizes this as a problem and comes up with a fix. I'll keep an eye on the NGs and hope. I want to thank you and all of the other folks who helped me.
Mike

P.S. The PDF writer and the various Publish to PDF options do still work.

If the Microsoft PostScript driver isn't working, then it isn't for
Adobe to fix...

Yes, the Windows 2000/XP PostScript driver is PSCRIPT5.DLL. It is distributed with Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 as part of the operating system. If you cannot get it to install with the "Add Printer" wizard, you need to talk with Microsoft Tech Support. This is absolutely not an Adobe issue!

Hi Dov:
Thank you for your reply. In my case pscript5.dll is installed in Windows/system32/spool/drivers/w32x86/3, where I believe it should be. I may have a corrupt file but I don't know how to check this out without a copy from another source. I'm still stumped! BTW pscript5.dll, not being a .inf file cannot be installed using the Add Printer wizard.

Of course it can. Just choose any PostScript printer. If you aren't
using Add Printer, how can it work?

If you apply the Adobe Postscript Driver Installer (winisteng.exe)
you will install the same file PSSRIPT5.DLL again. You must have in any case a PPD file of your printer.
