I am receiving error messages generated from Windows XP that my file did not print. It seems the spooler is timing out. However, after a a short wait, the spooler continues, the error message dissapears and the file prints fine. H.P. thinks the printer needs more memory. If I print the same file from my Windows NT machine the print job takes the same amount of time but gives no error message. Is this a Post Script Driver problem with Windows XP?

How do you have the printer configured? I would strongly recommend you reconfigure the driver to spool the entire document before starting the print process. It is not a "driver" problem. - Dov

The printer is confiqured to spool the entire file. When the spooler reaches about 47 MB it gives an error message that the file did not print properly. The spooler remains idle for about half a minute and then the error message vanishes and the spooler continues. The document prints fine. I've run this same document in my old PC that runs under Windows NT. The spooler behaves identical but no error message. The error is more af an anoyance than a real problem now, but I am concerned once I upgrade to the CS Suite.

By the way, what type of printer are you sending this file to? Is it in fact a PostScript printer? If in fact you are spooling the entire file before printing and the spooling process stops mid-track before even beginning to send any data to the printer, then it obviously has nothing to do with the printer memory. However, the symptom you describe, i.e. an error message that appears then disappears followed by proper output, is one that would occur after the spooler actually is sending data to the printer and the printer stops accepting data while its buffers are full and it processes the incoming data buffers. The spooler turns off the error message when data "starts moving again" so to speak. My gut feel at this point is that the printer driver's "timeout" settings are problematic. In the "Advanced" tab, set both the "Job Timeout" and the "Wait Timeout" to "0 seconds" meaning effectively no timeout. - Dov

It is a HP 8500DN, which is a PostScript printer. I can not find a timeout setting in the printer properties, advanced tab. Is it somewhere else in XP?

By the way, the Windows NT drivers are completely different programs; they started again and nothing is the same. Don't expect to find anything in the same place. Aandi Inston
