I am stuck on this problem for a year now and I still can not get the above printer to work with Windows PC. I bought the printer via eBay and there is no software come with it. I have managed to find a MAC .PPD for the printer but all I could do is to send the file to the printer and the ready light flash on and off for over an hour and the paper was not printed. Is it possibe that the printer will work with only a MAC? There is a dongle for the Harlequin RIP. I tried to send a test raw MAC PS file via a program Printfile from my PC and it still does not work. I tried to convert a DOS PS to MAC format and then send it. It still does not work. Is it possible that the MAC send the PS file in different format than a Window PC? Or SCSI protocol on MAC is different compare with Windows? I used Adaptec Easy-SCSI and the Adobe PS printer drive to set up the SCSI printer port as LPT2. I can print a test page from the printer menu and the seller assured me that the printer worked before he sent it. Thanks for any hints. Tuong

There is a dongle for the Harlequin RIP. Do you mean that the printer comes with a Harlequin RIP? If so, have you installed the RIP, and does it seem to work? This point is crucial. > >I tried to send a test raw MAC PS file via a program Printfile from my PC ... If the printer comes with a RIP, it will certainly need a RIP. Aandi Inston

Aandi, Thanks for your help. What file? A PostScript file? Made with what driver? A PostScript file (in the MAC format) I found on a webpage. First few line of the file: !PS-Adobe-3.0 %%Title: (apac98a4.tex) %%Creator: (Textures\252: LaserWriter 8 8.4.2) %%CreationDate: (5:00 PM 1997\224N 12\214\216 11\223\372 \226\330\227j\223\372) %%For: (Yong Ho Chin) %%Pages: 6 No I don't a copy of the Harlequin RIP. I only have the dongle. I did not think it would need a RIP because the PPD says it is a level 2. See the first few lines of the PPD file: PPD-Adobe: "4.2" * % Adobe Systems Compatible PostScript(R) Printer Description File * % for the Fuji FirstProof PPD v.1.2 * % * % Copyright 1996 Fuji Photo Film Co.,Ltd. All Rights Reserved. * % Created by: Y.Muramoto * % Modifyed by: Y.Muramoto '96 5/20 * % :Paper Handling/InputSlot * % * % * FormatVersion: "4.2" * FileVersion: "1.2" * PCFileName: "First proof.ppd" * LanguageVersion: English * Product: "(FIRST PROOF)" * ModelName: "FIRST PROOF" * ShortNickName: "FIRST PROOF" * NickName: "FUJI FIRST PROOF" * % Basic Device Capabilities ======================== * LanguageLevel: "2" Is it still mean that I need a RIP program? Thanks, Tuong

By the way, if that is a Mac dongle (like a car cigar lighter on a short cable) you will certainly need a Mac. A used Mac of the same vintage as the proofer shouldn't cost too much. I've found more pages, which seem to confirm it's a software RIP. Aandi Inston

Aandi, I followed your recommendations and contact Fuji support and they will send me the RIP program for 100 Euro. I will buy it but I hit another brick wall, Fuji will not sell any more paper or ribbon for the printer. Next time I will buy a Kodak printer, at least they still supply for even older printer. Many thanks for your help. Tuong.

> Fuji will not sell any more paper or ribbon for the printer. That's bad, but perhaps there are other companies making suitable "clones". It would be especially bad if one had got the thing originally for $35000 - it is only four years old! Aandi Inston
