PS driver won't install on WinXP Pro

Hoo boy... I'm a Mac-head suddenly faced with getting a new WinXP Pro machine set up. XP Help, Dell Help, and MS Help aren't helping ;-)

We have a simple LAN; 12 'puters, printers, and RIPs on a switch; everything works fine (including the Win98 machine this new one is replacing).

When I try to install PS driver from the universal installer, all goes well until the installer wants me to add an actual printer. I've got 2 HP lasers, a Xante laser, and a GCC laser (all PS2 or 3) on the network, but XP doesn't "see" any of them in the "Browse..." dialog. When I try to use an IP, the PS installer complains about the printer's name being "wrong."

(But, for instance, XP *does* "see" the Xante IP when I install its PCL driver.)

XP is somewhat confusing to me -- the wide array of protocols, clients, and services I'm used to seeing in Network control panel are all gone; all that's offered is Client for Windows, and TCP/IP.

What's the trick?

(As I said, I'm a Mac-head... please speak slowly and clearly ;-)

My experience of installing network-ready printers on a PC is that you
have to first add a Port, typically an IP port, for the printer. In
some cases you install the printer on LPT1, then change the port.

This is not a very intuitive process, and it is usually necessary to
follow the manufacturer's install process. You will need the
installation manuals for each printer.

Right. I can install, for instance, the Xante 3G's PCL driver by creating a port for its IP addy. Unfortunately, when I try to do this for the PostScript driver installer, I get an error message that the "printer name is wrong."

(Plus, I can only use that IP on *one* port; so presumably even if I could past the "name is wrong" error, I would only be able to use that Xante as a PCL printer OR as a PS printer; not both. Ugh.)

Surely I can't be the only person out there hanging Xantes, GCCs, and HPs off an Ethernet LAN printing PostScript from Win XP Pro....

I fainly rember that XP refuses to install printers where one of the name fields (ProductName or NickName) in the PPD contains a comma. Edit the PPD (using a text editor) and try again.
