I'm trying to embed a hyperlink in my distilled PDF using pdfmark, /URI, & ExtEscape with POSTSCRIPT_PASSTHROUGH. It works when distilling an EPS but not a PS. Since my Postscript printer driver outputs PS and not EPS I'd like to know what I should change to make it work with PS. The only difference between the two examples below is the header on line 1: This works: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0 This doesn't work: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 Examples: This works: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0 %%BoundingBox: 0 0 72 72 %%Creator: me %%Title: URL PDFMark %%BeginProlog %%EndProlog %%BeginDocument: Pscript_Win_PassThrough [ /Rect [ 0 0 72 72 ] /Border [ 0 0 0 ] /Action << /Subtype /URI /URI (http://www.adobe.com) >> /Subtype /Link /ANN pdfmark %%EndDocument This doesn't work: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 %%BoundingBox: 0 0 72 72 %%Creator: me %%Title: URL PDFMark %%BeginProlog %%EndProlog %%BeginDocument: Pscript_Win_PassThrough [ /Rect [ 0 0 72 72 ] /Border [ 0 0 0 ] /Action << /Subtype /URI /URI (http://www.adobe.com) >> /Subtype /Link /ANN pdfmark %%EndDocument

Both should work. Do you mean that if you distill the two files you pasted, exactly with nothing else added but a showpage, that you don't get links from the PS file? Or are you processing the PS file in some other way? Aandi Inston

Hi Aandi, That's right. When I distill the two files that I pasted, exactly with nothing added at all (not even showpage), I don't get a link from the PS file. All I do is copy the 2 files to distiller's 'in' directory and open both output files when they appear in distiller's 'out' directory.

Without a showpage I'd expect Distiller to refuse to do anything (since a zero page PDF can't exist). So perhaps something else is going on... Aandi Inston

Just in case the missing showpage was causing the problem, I added a showpage command to my PS example and it still doesn't work. %!PS-Adobe-3.0 %%BoundingBox: 0 0 72 72 %%Creator: me %%Title: URL PDFMark %%BeginProlog %%EndProlog %%BeginDocument: Pscript_Win_PassThrough [ /Rect [ 0 0 72 72 ] /Border [ 0 0 0 ] /Action << /Subtype /URI /URI (http://www.adobe.com) >> /Subtype /Link /ANN pdfmark showpage %%EndDocument

I'm not sure if and how the Distiller handles EPS files differently than PS files, but you should be aware that there are a number of restrictions on EPS files to make them valid. To just take a PS file and change a few lines does not automatically make it into a valid EPS file (and the other way around, possibly). I doubt that this is significant in your case, and maybe you're already aware of it, but I thought I should mention it anyway. -- /Thomas Michanek, FrameMaker/UNIX/MIF expert Technical Communicator, Uppsala, Sweden http://go.to/framers/

Thanks for the reply Thomas. To clarify, the EPS example works and the PS example doesn't. I need to make any small PS example work.

I still don't know why my PS example doesn't work, but I changed to a different printer driver on the PS generating machine and now I have working links. So I have what I need. Thanks...
