Is there such thing as generic or default PPD file, i.e. one you can use if you don't have the proper file, even if it means not being able to use all features of the particular printer? If not, will Adobe Distiller PPD files do the job? Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks, Alexander

Yes. Indeed AdobePS installs such a generic default if you let it. It is not a good choice. Bear in mind it has to avoid ALL printer features, including level 2, page sizes other than a4/letter, and colour. Aandi Inston

The Distiller PPD is fairly close to being a generic PPD for a composite color, Adobe PostScript 3 device with null page margins. It allows an exceptional variety of custom page sizes but doesn't have entries to provide to printer specific features such as duplexing, collation, input tray choice, manual feed, separations, etc. In general, when dealing PostScript generation, it is always much preferable to have a PPD for the target PostScript device. - Dov

It's possible to write a PostScript program which will spit out a lot of what goes into a PPD file. One would probably have to use SNMP to get some of the info (eg. how many trays are present) A fun exercise for somebody with too much free time.
