Can't Install Reader 8 due to previous ver not able to uninstall...

I'm at my wits end here...I have uninstalled everything Adobe related on my machine however I still show a listing for Adobe 7.0.7 - the error message I get when I try to change or remove is "The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the sourse exists and that you can access it." Well I have no idea what that means - other than I've already un-installed it therefore there are no files to access. I have tried to reinstall 7.0.7 getting the same error as well as 8 and I get that I can't install it due to a previous version not able to be uninstalled...what am I missing?!?!? TIA!!
