How do I remove number when underlining

Whenever I use the underline text tool a number shows up in front of it. For example when I underline some text and finish, it will put the number 1 with a box around it. If I go to another section of the document and underline, it will show the number 2 with a box around the number. Why is this happening? What can I do to eliminate this so all I have is the underline with no numbers? Please help!!!!
