Mark,

Although I had run it previously from my own account (which has admin rights on the local machine) I ran Disk Utility > Repair Permissions while logged in as root. It found nothing to repair. This report is from my iMac G5:

==========
Repairing permissions for OSX
Determining correct file permissions.

Permissions repair complete
The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume
==========

However, I have more information now. I found that Adobe Reader 8.0.0 application would launch fine under the root account; and the first thing it did was to launch a second application (that put a white icon into the dock) that appeared to be the updater. After that Reader was fine, and there were no crashes. (I did not test Safari).

Then I logged in with a local admin account, Reader opened fine (no update application appeared to launch, however) and did not crash.

I logged back in with my personal account (which is a network account, Active Directory, with admin rights on the local machine) and again Reader crashed with 15 seconds. I deleted all adobe-related items from my home folder, and tried again, and again it crashed.

I reproduced this behavior on both my iMacs, G5 and Intel. So perhaps the issue, at least in my case, is that Reader's updater program cannot run when logged in using network credentials, meaning a non-local account, even if it has local admin rights.

Is anyone else with this issue logging in to their Mac with network credentials?
