Mike, At first, I could not install the Microsoft Installer Cleanup utility, because of a VBscript engine problem on my machine. In a few clicks, however, I installed MS script engine 5.6 to repair the script engine problems on my computer. Then I ran the MS Cleanup utility successfully, and then Adobe Reader 8.0 opened correctly and has been running smoothly. Thanks again for the excellent advise.
