I am having the same exact problem. I have Adobe 7.0.5 with Windows XP and I tried upgrading to Adobe 8.0 today and when it got to a point in the installation it said that it could not delete the previous version of Adobe that I have but the thing is that it came up and said my older version of Adobe was 8.0! It said it "couldn't delete the older version of 8.0" which can't be true as in my version is 7.0.

Seems like we all have in common is that we have Windows XP, is there something wrong with trying to download the new Adobe with Windows?
