Cannot remove Adobe Reader 7.0.8

I cant remove the old version. I get an error message "This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and you can access it or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."
Plus I used to be able to open ebooks with this version. Now I get an error message "The 'Updater' plug-in has been removed. Please re-install Acrobat to continue viewing the current file."
All this happened after I downloaded the Adobe Reader 8.0, but couldnt open ebooks, so I did system restore.
I am using XP SP2, Pentium M 725, 512 MB RAM.
