Basic Greek replacing text when opening documents

When I open documents, Basic Greek symbols are showing in place of much of the text. Examples of these are as follows: , ∑, ξ, θ, Ω, π, ĕ, λ, etc. This results in the document being unreadable. I can tell that it has to do with a certain font, but I don't know which font that is. I depend on these documents for my work, so I am desperate to fix this problem. Please help!!
