I already solved this, so to speak, in that I found the problem (in addition to what poster Adrian Holt reported), but I'm puzzled because I recall posting the solution, and now it seems to have disappeared from the forum without notice. One, many PDFs are reproductions of graphical images of pages of text, and searching them is futile. Two, many words in texts have spaces embedded within them, probably for more precise control of page presentation but when they're copied and pasted into a text editor like Windows Notepad spaces appear within some words, which makes those words not searchable if your search term doesn't use the same spaces. For example, to be hypothetical, if "Hello" on a page copies into Notepad as "He llo", a search for "Hello" in the PDF will fail at that location. If a search for "Hello" succeeds with 6 hits, it might still have missed 3 other cases if the PDF had "Hello" 6 times and "He llo" 3 times. -- Nick
