I have the same problem, but it doesn't happen to all PDFs. It happens rarely and isn't reproducible.
PDFs are created by activePDF Toolkit (PDF Version 1.3) and I'm using Adobe Reader 7.0.5 (Windows 2000).
In my case it only happens to the font Courier. The font is printed in Arial and all the characters are shift by one. The Courier font in my document is a type 1 font. In my opinion it can be solved, if you only use TrueType Fonts and no printer internal Fonts (Courier New insted of Courier) when you create the PDF. I can't change the process of creating the PDFs, so it wouldn't solve my prolem.
I think it dosen't matter if you use a PCL or Postscript printer if the driver spools EMF. In my case I use a EMF-Driver to capture the EMF for a DMS-System.
An other thread with the same problem:

I've heared about the Problem only, if the PDF ist printed on a local Printer (Driver installed local). Has anyone the same Problem with a Network-Printer (Maped Network printer)?
