A lot of people have run, as I did, into this problem: italic characters (specifically the font Time NewRoman Italics) being changed to greek characters when viewing a PDF created from, say, a Word document. It happens to me when creating the PDF using Acrobat 3D or .prn file + distiller of even using WinPDF. I use the latest Reader v.7.0.8. My colleagues have no problem with my PDFs.

Several posts here (search this forum for the word greek) have addressed this problem in one of two methods:

1) Uncheck Document|Use local fonts in the reader, OR
2) Delete the VNI & VNI2 sub & superscript fonts (4 files) from the Windows|Fonts directory.

Each solution has its drawbacks:

1) The problem returns;
2) What happens if another app needs the deleted fonts?

I have found another way that solves both problems: edit each of the 4 font files to remove their link to the Times NewRoman Italics font. Use an editor (I used UltraEdit for that) and simply change "Times" to "Ximes" (in 2 places) and change "T.i.m.e.s" for "X.i.m.e.s" (in 2 places also); save the file back to Windows|Fonts under the same name; repeat for all four files.

This has solved my problem for good :-)

P.S. Does anyone know what application(s) installed these 4 font files?
