Howdy Christine.

There shouldn't be any conflicts running Reader and Acrobat.

I assume you've tried repairing disk permissions?

Also, try tossing out the preference files com.adobe.Reader7.0.plist and com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro6.0.plist.

Also, If niether of the above work, try deleting the font caches AdobeFnt07.lst.
