Great! Now I don't feel so stupid. I am having exactly the same problem with Adobe Reader trying to update from 7.0.7 to 7.0.8. I have tried the Control Panel uninstaller and even have gone as far as deleting each file one by one from the Adobe folder only to have two files (can't remember which) give me some nasty message about being protected and not deleting. Contacting the Customer support people did not help. Because Reader is free, there is no technical support available to dig further than what we have tried. She told me to get on this forum to see if anyone else has a solution. If Adobe didn't have a lock on this type application I'd go elsewhere. Anyone out there have a solution to this issue?
