Strange Character in Bookmarks on Some PCs

We're having a problem with viewing a PDF file. I've opened it on a dozen Windows XP computers now, all with Acrobat Reader 7.0.8. On some computers the Bookmarks show up fine, but on others there's a strange character overprinting the first number in table numbers in the Bookmark's List of Tables. Below is a picture with the error circled in red.

Why does this pdf file read wrong on some computers but OK on others, when all have the same version of Acrobat and are running the same OS? The error shows up only in the Bookmarks - the table numbers inside the document itself are fine. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat Reader on my computer, and the error still shows. Thanks much for any advice!
