I have a servlet application that takes a request for just a form name (we'll call this URL 1). Our intranet proxy sends the userid as an HTTP header. The servlet reads that and the form name parameter, gets data from LDAP from the userid, and sends back a redirect, with an absolute path to the form, along with request parameters containing the LDAP data (we'll call this URL 2). The Javascript in the form (that's executed on open) reads the "this.URL" variable, parses the request parameters, and autofills several fields from that data. If the code is unable to get the parameters, it presents an error dialog, because it needs those parameters.

Before a few days ago, this was working fine. Then, we got Adobe Reader upgraded to version 7.0.5 (I'm not certain whether we had v6 just before that, or an incremental version of v7). Now, when the Javascript executes after the redirect, the value of "this.URL" is actually "URL 1", instead of "URL 2". Strangely enough, while I'm seeing the error dialog on the screen, showing it wasn't able to get the parameters, the URL field in the browser (IE) shows "URL 2", which is correct.

I've determined that when the Javascript gets the wrong URL, the page presented to the user wasn't obtained from the server, but from the local cache (I don't know if this is IE's cache, or something cached by Reader).

I normally do this only in IE, but I tested this in Firefox also. This gets a completely different problem. It says that it can't open the PDF in the browser, so it opens a separate Reader window. I have the "Open PDFs in Browser" flag checked, I always have.

Then, I tried moving back to Reader 6 and doing the same test in both browsers. These results were even more interesting. In IE, it says that it can't open the PDF in the browser, and gives me the "File Download" dialog. In Firefox, the symptom is that it works perfectly fine. It displays the PDF in the browser, and it doesn't demonstrate the "wrong URL" problem. Installing v6 was just for testing. I can't use v6, as everyone on our network has been moved to v7.

I noticed that there already are revisions 7.0.7 and 7.0.8 of Reader. I searched on the web site for anything resembling release notes for those revisions, and I couldn't find anything.
