Adobe Reader 8 will not open

I'm helping someone with their PC. They cannot get any PDF files to open and Adobe Reader will not even open directly. I've uninstalled Reader 7 then upgraded them to Reader 8. When you click on the Adobe Reader 8 icon, or right click and choose Open, the cursor changes to an hourglass briefly, but the software does not open and display the program. However, when you shut down the computer, you can see the icon flash on and off like there is really an instance of Reader running, but it just won't display the program screen itself. I've seen the acrobat reader process running in this situation as well, even though it doesn't appear that the program is running since you never see the screen. I've uninstalled Reader 8 and reinstalled it several times. I've run a registry cleaner, I've used some of the tips included in the Adobe support knowledge base, but with the same results.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
