Hello Barry,
I've had a similar installation problem and the tips given didn't work. Like you I was stuck with half of the old version 7 and none of the new version 8.

Solution.
I tried cleaning out the remaining bits of version seven by brute force, scanning the registry for references to first only acrobat then all off Adobe to get a clean install.

No good, something was still there, because I kept getting the error messages , something about the net...

So anyway I noticed that Adobe had changed the installer software machine. I keep my old programs if they are useful. I tried installing V7, v6... V4 and finally I found I could install version 4.

Once I had a working version of acrobat, then I ran again the
installation for version 8.

This time there were no mysterious references to net problems and the version 8 installed and it seems runs correctly.

You could try the same, sequence. Install acrobat4.exe. and then try and next install on top of version 4 directly Adberdr80_en_US.exe

If you can't find acrobat 4, email me fredfmah@yahoo.com and I'll append a copy. It's not a big file only 5.6MB so it is sent quickly.

I hope this may solve your problem as well

Cheers
Fred
