I had the exact same problem as Stefan -- I solved it by removing the updater.api file from the Adobe Reader 8.0\Reader\plug_ins directory. You could try removing all the files from the plug_in directory, and if this cures the problem, try adding them back a group at a time until you find the one(s) that are causing the problem.
