1. This is a bit beyond what I have encountered. I fully understand those who are leery of working with the Registry. However, there are things stored there that affect programs in odd ways. If you have access to a commercial Registry cleaning program-try it. I was able to remove everything manually for versions 5-7.0.8. Then again, I did not have your specific issue.
2. To create a Restore Point in WIN XP SP2 you go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Restore. There you will have the option of either creating or using a Restore Point. As to backing up the Registry you need to go to Start/Run/(type)Regedit and press enter. There you will find under "File" "Export". You can save the files offline or in a folder of your choice.
3. You MUST not allow any anti-something programs to run while doing this project. If you are offline, there is no possible way for you to be attacked that I am aware of. Conflicts with these programs surface from time to time.
I must warn you that I have not had to do this and cannot verify how to go from here.

IF all of the usual things fail, you may have to rebuild Windows.
I do hope that Adobe actually visits this site and reads what is going on. Maybe they have a solution they can post that is better than mine.
