This method did work. From the Adobe Support Knowledge Base: 1. Install Adobe Reader in a simplified Windows mode. Because device drivers can interfere with opening or installing files, restart Windows in a simplified mode to disable the device drivers, and then install Adobe Reader. To start Windows in a simplified mode: On Windows XP: 1. Choose Start > Run. 2. Type msconfig in the Open text box, and then press Enter. 3. Click the Startup tab, click Disable All, and then click OK. 4. In the System Configuration dialog box, click Restart. 5. Press F8 when you see the message "For Advanced Startup Options." 6. Select VGA Mode from the list of startup options. 7. In the Desktop dialog box, click OK to start Windows.
