Can't open a link to a pdf in excel

In my office, we have a number of excel spreadsheets that include hyperlinks to pdfs stored on our network drive. I have adobe reader 7.0, and the files open just fine when I click on the file itself, but when I click on the hyperlinks in excel, adobe flashes a blank window for a moment and then disappears.
