Display of characters is different between v5 and v7-8

When viewing PDFs in v5 the file displays normally. When viewing in v7 or 8, some lines are displayed light and some dark. Some characters are dark and some light. Even some characters have both dark and light parts to them. Any idea of what the issue could be?
