Still Having Font Trouble

I posted about this a couple of weeks ago. I'm getting an error regularly when I open PDFs with Adobe Reader 7.0.8 on and XP Pro with SP2 installed. It says "Cannot find or create the font xxx (different with each file). Some characters may not display or print correctly." The same PDF files are read with no problem on another machine I use with XP64 Pro and also Adobe Reader 7.0.8. I've since tried with no improvement to reinstall again, this time even checking the registry for any vestigial data left there. I restarted the computer after uninstalling the old installation. I haven't seen anything here in the forum or in the FAQ about this particular problem and I'm beginnng to think I've been somehow specially cursed with it. Has anyone heard of this before? Should there be a directory of Type I fonts somewhere on the machine?

TIA

I am experiencing the same problem. It all started when I responded to an automated message telling me I should download and install updates, prior to this I had no problems. I too have found no cure to this. I have removed and re-installed the program, even removing all trace of Adobe in the registry then re-installing but the problem persists. It is as if I have no fonts installed or registered yet the fonts are all there in c:\windows\fonts there are also some which are reporting as not available which are also in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Resource\Font though there are only 13 fonts in there. I can see images in the PDF's.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Eventhough you have uninstalled and then reinstalled you might take a look at this doc:

Thanks for the link it looked promising, unfortunately it hasn't fixed the problem.

I've tried the repair strategy as well, but it hasn't solved the problem for me either (I tried it again last night just to be sure). Today I opened a PDF and Acrobat Reader said it couldn't find or create ArialBlack. Pretty basic font. The mystery (or perhaps the clue for anyone who really knows how AR works) is that a complete uninstall/reinstall doesn't help. Suggests that maybe something in the OS that it looks for is corrupt. Does anyone know what DLLs or other system libraries it uses?

When I create my own PDFs using a CutePDF printer driver, if I choose "Download as soft fonts" from the Truetype options (as opposed to the default "Substitute Device Fonts"), I can read the result with no problem. But the files are much bigger and, of course, PDFs that other people or commercial companies produce aren't written that way.

Thanks.

I am working again.. Not sure which part of this cured the problem but this is what I did.

Uninstalled every trace of Adobe using control panel/add and remove programs, delete any remaining folders left behind by the uninstall eg C:\Program Files\Adobe, run regedit and search for "adobe" delete anything found, run a registry cleaner (http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/) $19.99 I allowed it to "fix" everything it found, reboot, installed Adobe v6.

This is a very drastic way to fix what you would expect to be a simple problem. It may work if you install the latest version of Adobe but I was playing safe with one I had working before I started on the upgrade path.

Hope this helps
