Performance Issue

Greetings,

We're running Adobe Reader 8.1.2, and Acrobat Standard 8.1.3 on our client machines (XP Pro). Our clients need to access documents on a network share (Win2k3 R2)located on a server in which there is a hardware VPN connection between the office and server rack.

When our clients try to open a PDF (anything from 500KB to 1.5 MB), it takes more than a minute to open the file, with little output. I've disabled Windows Defender, and actually upgraded Reader(v9) on one client machine. While this reduces the performance problem by 30%, it is still not ideal.

Our clients are complaining about loss of productivity, and we need a solution to this. I've tested this from one of our test machines that have a similar topology to theirs', and a PDF opens up quickly.

My guess would be problems with miscallenious plugins, firewalls, etc, but I wanted more of an expert opinion. Also, could someone point me to that piece of software for "lightning speed" when opening PDFs. I saw it referenced before on these forums, but I can't find it anymore...

Thanks.

Network topology isn't the issue. Perhaps network speed is. Load on the
server is. I had a hardware router that was very old. It slowed
connections, upgrading to a new router increased speed tremendously.
Network settings can also have a large effect. My recommendation call IT
and have them send a network specialist that can have hardware tools to
help evaluate network performance.

Mike,

The connection averages 15 Mbs down and 3-4 Mbs upload using tests from iperf as well as testing from speakeasy.

Most of the server equipment is new, and we haven't noticed any large spikes in the processor load. The problem is that I can open these same pdfs from a test machine on a completely different network (over hardware VPN) and the pdfs open fine. I think it might have to do with the plugins/etc, because I use a barebones version of Acrobat Reader.

I just don't want to break any dependencies/functionality with normal Acrobat. Well, I'll test it and report back...
