Is this the only story in the document? The only story on page 1? How can the script know which story to work on? 

Are you using a template for the documents? If so, and there are many stories, one way to flag the story to the script is (in the template) give the first text frame of the story a script label and then the script can look for that. 

      set myStory to parent story of text frame 1 whose label is "whatever"

Something along those lines will get you the story. 

Then, you can just reference the paragraphs by number: 

      set applied paragraph style of paragraphs of myStory to paragraph style
      "Fred" of document 1

      set applied paragraph style of paragraph 1 of myStory to paragraph style
      "Head" of document 1

      repeat with n from 2 to (count of paragraphs of myStory)

etc.
