AppleScript or VB? 

In AppleScript, I'd have the user either click on any text frame of the story with the pointer tool or anywhere in the story with the text tool. Then, I'd use: 

      set myStory to parent story of selection

Now I'm not sure what you're actually trying to do. Do you want the same format for all the text in the story? Or should each paragraph have its own formatting?
